Hackman Tribute – The French Connection & The Birdcage

Gene Hackman: A Legacy on Screen

Two unforgettable films. One extraordinary actor.

Join Pat’s Film Club for a special tribute to one of cinema’s most versatile actors. On Sunday, March 30th, we celebrate Gene Hackman’s extraordinary range with a double bill showcasing two wildly different performances from his illustrious career.

From the gritty streets of 1970s New York to the flamboyant world of South Beach drag, this pairing demonstrates why Hackman remains one of America’s most respected actors—capable of inhabiting characters across the entire spectrum of human experience with authenticity, nuance, and unforgettable presence.

The French Connection

William Friedkin’s kinetic, Oscar-winning thriller features Gene Hackman in his career-defining role as Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle—a role that earned him his first Academy Award and forever changed the landscape of American crime films.

Raw, relentless, and radiating with nervous energy, Hackman’s Doyle is a complicated anti-hero: bigoted, obsessive, and operating on pure instinct as he pursues an elusive French drug smuggler through the grimy streets of New York City. The film’s legendary car chase remains one of cinema’s most heart-stopping sequences, but it’s Hackman’s ferocious performance that gives the film its enduring power.

Watching Hackman stalk the streets in that iconic porkpie hat, you’re witnessing an actor at the absolute height of his powers, creating a character so authentic you can practically smell the cigarettes and stale coffee on his breath.
