Pat’s Film Club Returns to Falmouth & Redruth
with the Christmas movie that bites back!
Gremlins
After far too long away, Pat’s Film Club is thrilled to return to two of our favourite Cornwall venues – The Phoenix in Falmouth and The Regal in Redruth. It’s been too long since we last brought you The Hills Have Eyes, and we couldn’t think of a better film to mark our homecoming than Joe Dante’s anarchic Christmas classic.
Why Gremlins?
Picture this: December 1984. Ghostbusters opens the same day and everyone’s talking about it. But there’s this other film – quieter, stranger, with that unmistakable Spielberg touch (he produced it) wrapped around something deliciously dark. While everyone else was choosing their favourite ghost, I was falling in love with Gizmo and being genuinely unsettled by what happens when the rules get broken.
Gremlins is that rare beast – a Christmas movie that works because it understands that the holidays aren’t always perfect. Beneath the homespun sweetness of small-town America lurks something wonderfully anarchic. It’s It’s a Wonderful Life (showing the night before in Truro) meets The Twilight Zone, and it shouldn’t work but absolutely does.
And then there’s Phoebe Cates’ Christmas speech. If you know, you know. If you don’t… well, you’re in for something unforgettable.
This is cinema that trusts its audience – scary enough for adults, fun enough for families, smart enough to know exactly what it’s doing. Joe Dante crafted something that feels like a Capra film directed by someone with a seriously twisted sense of humour.
Join us for a very special return to two cinemas close to our hearts. Because sometimes the best Christmas presents come with very specific instructions…
Remember: No bright lights, no water, and never feed them after midnight.
Book now – it’s been too long!
